ICN → World Airports: Flight Time & Time Zone Complete Guide

Author 김지광 (Operator)Last updated bal.pe.kr Micro SaaS

The three numbers every traveler departing Korea needs are flight duration + time difference + local arrival time. This guide covers average block times for 38 major cities and jet-lag minimisation strategies.

Flight times are estimates based on great-circle distance + cruising speed 860 km/h + 30-min takeoff/landing buffer + 8% headwind correction for westbound flights. Actual flight times vary by wind and routing by ±30 min. Time differences use the IANA tz database with automatic DST.

2. How Flight Time Is Estimated

  • Great-circle distance — The shortest curved path between two points on Earth. Real routes deviate slightly for airspace and jet-stream routing, but stay within ±3% of the great-circle figure for commercial flights.
  • Cruising speed 860 km/h — Average ground speed for long-haul aircraft like the 787/A350. A 30-minute block for takeoff and taxi is added to produce gate-to-gate block time.
  • Jet-stream correction — The westerly jet stream flows west to east, so eastbound flights (ICN → LAX) get a tailwind bonus, while westbound flights (ICN → Europe) face headwinds of about +8% longer time. This correction is applied automatically.
  • Ground time excluded — Airport check-in (2 h before), immigration, and baggage claim (~30 min) are separate — add these to your itinerary planning.

3. The Science of Jet Lag

Your body's master clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus, SCN) responds most strongly to the blue component of sunlight. The two most powerful levers for jet-lag recovery are light exposure and meal/sleep timing.

  • Eastbound (Korea → Americas / Europe) — You need to advance your sleep, which is harder. Start shifting bedtime 1 hour earlier each day, 3–5 days before departure.
  • Westbound (Americas / Europe → Korea) — Delaying sleep is easier. Stay awake until Korean bedtime on arrival day and you can recover within 24 hours.
  • 6+ hour time difference — Consider 0.5–3 mg melatonin (consult a doctor). A 20–30 minute morning walk in sunlight is the most effective single intervention for the first two days.
  • Caffeine and alcohol — Avoid both on the plane and on arrival day. They disrupt sleep rhythm and delay recovery by 2+ days.

4. Arrival-Time-Based Adaptation Strategy

  • Local morning arrival (06:00–11:00) — Store luggage, walk 2–3 hours in sunlight. Allow only a 30-min nap after lunch, then sleep at local bedtime.
  • Local afternoon arrival (11:00–17:00) — A short nap after check-in is fine. Wind down with light exercise, shower, and dinner before sleep.
  • Local evening arrival (17:00–22:00) — Eat lightly and go to bed early. This is the most comfortable arrival window.
  • Late night/early morning arrival — Go straight to bed. Set an alarm before 08:00 to avoid oversleeping.

5. Stopover Checklist

  • Minimum connecting time (MCT) — Typically 1–1.5 h for international-to-international; 2+ h for international-to-domestic. Check the official MCT on your booking platform.
  • Automatic baggage transfer — Only available on through-check tickets. Self-transfer (e.g. LCC + FSC combination) requires re-checking bags — allow 3+ h.
  • Visa and transit rules — US and Canada transits require ESTA/eTA even if you never leave the transit zone. China's 72-hour visa-free transit has specific origin/destination conditions.
  • Major hubs from ICN — Bangkok (BKK), Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), Doha (DOH), Dubai (DXB), Frankfurt (FRA), Paris (CDG), and Los Angeles (LAX) are the main transit hubs for Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas.
